Avid Juicy Ultimate
New disc brake and new fork question?
I have two questionsL
1) I just installed a set of avid juicy ultimates on my bike and when I spin the wheel I am getting some audible rub from the rotor on the brake pad, is this ok for new brakes? Its really not inhibiting the wheel noticeably, and I wouldnt classify it as drag. My guess is that the pads will wear down a bit after a while and this will stop? Also, I have to pull the levers almost all the way to the handle bar to get a full stop and even then the front brake will slip a little, does this mean I need to bleed the lines?
2) Just some advice, wondering what the best fork is I can get for $200. I am just replacing the Gilla RST 100mm on my Trek 4300. Do I have to get another 100mm fork or can I get one with 120mm which it seems most forks are, if not biggger. Will it greatly affect the geometry of the bike? Thanks for any help.
1) are the rotors true? If not you could have a slight warp in the rotor and that is causing the rub. If you have centered the calipers and don't notice any drag then it should be fine and will probalby wear just like you're thinking. You adjust the contact point with a 2.5mm hex wrench on the fancy red srew on the levers; so play around with that to get the best spot. If your brakes are new then you don't need to bleed them unless you shortend the hose length. If used it wouldn't hurt to bleed the brakes and get new brake pads you will be amazed at how much difference a new pad will make.
2) The geometry difference between 100 and 120 is Less Than an inch, I don't think it will make much difference but you will have to check with Trek to be sure. I would do it because you can get a Marzocchi 44 RLO 120mm for $240 with a new headset, or look on ebay for some deals on used forks.
