Can I redo a floor this way?
I am making a playroom, and I'm going to strip out the old carpet. What I would really like to do is cover the sub-floor with plank wood(maybe) or some other material. I would like to be able to paint the floor with a race tack town, game boards and the like. Then seal it somehow so it doesn't get scratched up and so I would be able to mop.
Any ideas for me on how to do this?
I don't want to buy those carpet play mats, they are expensive, hard to clean, and not very durable in my experience.
Sounds like a fun project. Plywood is probably your best bet for making a smooth surface with least cost and shortest installation time, unless you want the look of planks. Painting a floor is very do-able. Make sure you use deck or floor paint. Latex is best for the colour since it dries fast and you can do two coats in a day. On top of the latex you can use a water based clear coat. You can also use floor wax, the liquid acrylic kind, on top of paint, which will help protect the design. Go to Home Depot or a janitorial supply place and buy the professional quality stuff, it lasts much Better Than what you buy in the grocery store.
