the engine is trying to turn around, but just do not. start if it has been sitting for a couple of hours, but only lasts a few minutes then dies and will not begin for several more hours.

Sounds like a needle stuck in float carbohydrates. The bike leaking fuel into containers and then dies when the container is empty .... then slowly recharges the needle attached and does it all again. Try cleaning the carb, and getting retuned / sync.
